At Breathless, it is our number one objective to provide a comfortable, safe space to explore and practice all alternative lifestyles. It is our goal to provide a welcoming and uninhibited environment thru an inclusive event calendar which provides events that incorporate activities such as discussion groups, workshops, seminars and socials.
Our mission is to provide an environment that fosters education, open mindedness, approachability, the promotion of team work and encompasses a wide range of alternative lifestyles and sexual expressions, all founded on a volunteer basis.
Breathless is an “Alternative Lifestyles Community Centre and Private Club”. The Community Centre concentrates on the education and exploration of alternate lifestyles. This is done thru workshops, demos, discussion groups and various social events which are open to the public. Each caters to different interests. These events are relatively inexpensive to entice those who are interested in joining us, and some are even free!
Breathless is also a Members Only Club, which hosts events for different interests each weekend. Attendees must be a Member to attend these events. In this way, we know that everyone who attends has a genuine interest in our lifestyles, and isn’t able to drop in off the street to stop and stare.For quite some time, Ottawa has been hoping for a dedicated play space to open it’s doors. Others have tried it in the past, but for different reasons haven’t stayed open long. We hope this time will be different!
Breathless opened its doors on September 9th 2005. The concept for Breathless is a bit different from other clubs of the past, in hopes that by catering to many different alternative lifestyles it will stand the test of time.In the past some of the bigger, most successful events Breathless has hosted (both on and off site) have been Leather Fairs, Kinky Cabarets, Murdery Mystery, and the Fetish Ball.
Rules:
There are specific rules for all events at Breathless and they are as follows:1) All attendees at any event (public or private) must be at least 18 years of age or older. No exceptions! (We don’t want to corrupt the minors! We like them of legal age!)
2) No means No! Whether it’s to a dance, play or otherwise, take it graciously, do not be offended, and move on. (ask again later, maybe they’ll change their mind)
3) No photography, unless specified otherwise, or without prior consent by the owner or workers. No one wants to be ‘outed’ by having their picture appear somewhere. This is for the safety and comfort of everyone. (We take some pretty hot pics at the club but we are always careful not to catch any “innocents” in the background)
4) Absolutely NO drugs! Zero tolerance! Do not arrive high, and do not bring illegal drugs with you. (if you need to be high to enjoy what we do, you’re at the wrong club!!!)
5) No soliciting drugs or sex. (you can give away all the sex you want, but you cant buy or sell it!)
6) What you see at Breathless…. Stays at Breathless! Do not talk about what happens at the club outside with others who were not there (generalities are ok if you’re discrete). We don’t want to out anyone accidentally, nor do we want to draw unwanted attention to us by that old “Grey Hair” sitting two seats up from you on the bus.
7) Here’s a doozy… if you bring a weapon to the club (ie: a knife for knife play at a bdsm play party) it must remain in your toy bag until your scene, and be returned directly to your bag afterwards. You may not carry it around the club… this is dangerous!
8) No scat. (for those novices: scat = shit). I don’t want to have to clean that out of the carpet. For gold showers (piss play) that’s allowed only in the shower, and please clean up after yourself!! (bad enough I have to clean the toilets!!)
9) Please be aware of the time and space you are using. If it’s a busy night, be aware there are likely others waiting to use the same equipment/bed you are using.
1) You never touch anything (or anyone!) that is not yours! That includes people as well as toys. (just ask: sometimes the answer is yes!)
2) It is impolite to stare! We do not cater to voyeurs, so please be discrete.
3) You do not interrupt a scene. (This includes set up, clean up and after care). If you have questions or comments, please wait until they re-enter the social area.
4) If you don’t like what you see, walk away. Not everyone has the same tastes. (in that same theme: do not attend events that you are not interested in… your distaste will ruin the mood for others who are interested)
5) If you make a mess, clean it up! (treat the club like your home. If you are a slob at home, treat it better!!!)
6) At events where there is a buffet, please be appropriately dressed and wash your hands before helping yourself. (your neighbour will thank you!!!)
7) If you are wearing anything less than ‘Full Bottom Coverage’ (short skirt, thong, chaps, bare bottom), PLEASE sit on a towel or something else. Do not sit directly on our furniture, for hygienic reasons! (we don’t want to sit or lay in your ‘scootchie marks’!)
In future we’d like to see more alternative lifestyle groups utilize Breathless to host their events. We’d also like to have more participation from the members to help us decide what events to host and to have them help organize these events.
In the future we hope to have a network of likeminded organizations from Canada and the States to collaborate on bigger and better events for the alternative groups and to allow access to events in other cities.
Nothing ever runs so smoothly that it doesn't need help. And we need yours! If you have time to spare we'd love to have you as a volunteer! If you have a special talent and are willing to use it toward the betterment of this venue and our target lifestyles, please let us know.
We definitely need security and bar personel, for all Member's Only events on scheduled Friday and Saturday evenings. We also need people to host discussion groups, and to teach different topics and themes for workshops which will run on days or times other.
Security Volunteers
Security shifts are needed during regular Member's Only events and should be staffed by those who are not shy or soft-spoken and have some physical strength. They will be required primarily to station themselves at the front door and check membership ID. In addition they may be needed to help keep order and peace during events if necessary. If such a need arises, Security will also escort offenders from the property.
Bar/General Volunteers
Bar volunteers will be stationed on the main floor and will sell canned pop, bottled water, coffee, tea and other canteen-type items. They will keep track of all alcohol being checked at the bar for consumption by our guests during the evening as well as serve it. Volunteers will be handling cash at the bar, as well as help with food prep if necessary for the midnight buffet.
Workshop Volunteers
People with special skills and a willingness to share said skills with others are needed to teach workshops. Due to scheduling most workshops will be held primarily on Thursday evenings, Saturday daytime or possibly Sundays. For those who must travel from out of town, a travel budget may be offered. The centre will pay for all supplies needed, including photocopying handouts. You volunteer your time only.
